Great Dane as a first pet

Buttonz , Wednesday, 4th of August 2010 03:19:10 PM

l love great danes, but l am not sure if it is a good idea to get one as l
Buttonz
have never owned a dog before. l have had cats, horses, birds, hamsters,

before.
i've got a few questions about them;
- can they become

aggressive?
- are they loyal?
- are tehy hard to handle?

do they bark a lot?
- do they need a lot of attention, otherwise they
can become boisterous?
- can they be destructive in the house because
of their size? (because my mum has a lot fragile statue things that she
loves and displays them everywhere)?
- Are they indoor or outdoor
dogs?
- How long can they live for and how much are they usually?/>- What do you feed them?
sorry for all these questions. />thanks

I think a great dane would be a fine first pet, but make sure
love bunny
you thoroughly research the breed so you know what you are getting into.

Try looking at websites or even getting a breed book from a library. Even

though a breed may be predisposed to act in a certain way, every dog is an

a shelter or rescue. This way you will know up front whether or not the
dog will bark or be aggressive or destructive. Rescue dogs often have
some training too, which makes ur job easier.

I have a Great Dane & they are wonderful. They are HUGE though

& require a HUGE amount of time, MONEY & patience. They are often called

Gentle Giants & from experience I've found that to be true. They could be

aggressive but I've never seen one be aggressive. They tend to like

everyone & everything. Puppies are playful & because they are SO much

bigger than other puppies it might be a problem but just watch them & make
sure they aren't being too rough (just because of their size). They are SO
loyal. They can be hard to handle because of their size. They bark just
like any other dog & they need attention, just like any other dog. Because
of their sheer size they are a handful & can be destructive just because of
that. They can grow upwards of 150 lbs (usually males) so just imagine a
150 lb kid running through ur house. They can be both indoor & outdoor but
I recommend mostly indoor.you wouldn't want to be left outside day & night
would you? Great Danes don't typically live very long compared to other
dogs. Larger dogs have a life span usually around 10 years or so. I feed
my dane (pup) large breed puppy food.and lots of it. Hope this helps.try
doing more research online.there are several websites dedicated to the
Great Dane breed. Make sure that you have the time & patience & money to
deal with a Dane.they are a handful but a wonderful one at that.

well instead i'd choose a yorkie for first hand beginners or a
clappie
dachsuand for some of the smaller breeds before you get a bigger dog.

What I like to think of the Great Dane as is ''a horse.''
cuppin cakes
It is very large & they do require a lot of money, for all the food they

eat. I will try to answer all ur questions, & hope I can help, thanks.

-they will be aggressive if you treat them aggressivley, but overall they
Viewed 4979 times
are very sweet dogs.
-they are loyal, if ur all about loyalty try looking at a cattle dog, or
''Aussie.'' I have an Aussie & he shadows my every move, follows me
wherever I go.''
-they are fairly hard to control, as they are big dogs.
-they bark as much as any dog, but they aren't ''yappers''. =)
-lots of exircise
-well if there high enough it won't be a problem, they dont try & get on
ur lap, like tiny dogs. So I would be more scared to get a tiny dog, they
are most likely to knock over the items.
-both, outdoor mostly
-8-14 years
-they are a lot of money, you have to pay for more food, & bigger items.
-reg. Dog food, look for one that says big dogs.

No problem, I understand that you want to know all you can about the dog
ur thinking about getting, there are lots of dogs out there who is owners
leave them on the streets. It is always better to do research on the dog
ur getting.
Hope I could help, & best of luck to ur family & ur dog.

4. Typically, no, they're not a yappy breed. But they do have a loud bark.

daily, but they're not hyper.
6. Since they're so big, there is always this possibility. They could
easily knock something over without meaning to.
7. Most dogs are indoor dogs.
8. The average age is 10 years. If you get the dog from a rescue or
shelter, the dog won't cost much. If you get the Dane from a reputable
breeder, the dog could cost at least $1,000.
9. The same as you feed any other dog.

You know what? Im not trying to be mean, but im saying dont get

tails and large feet. They are extremly prone to eye problems.

Danes — as with dogs of any breed — may have dominance issues, may be

aggressive with other dogs of the same sex, or chase small animals;
however, this is quite rare.[9]

The Great Dane, Danish Hound, or German Mastiff, is a breed of domestic
dog (Canis lupus familiaris) known for its giant size & gentle
personality.[2] The breed is commonly referred to as the ''Gentle giant''
& the ''Apollo of all breeds.''[3] Great Danes are considered one of the
tallest dog breeds along with the Irish Wolfhound. More recently, Great
Danes have been in the Guinness World Records for tallest dog. The Great
Dane was named the state dog of Pennsylvania in 1965.[4]
